In HVAC, condensation refers to the process by which water vapor in the air changes into liquid water when it comes into contact with a cooler surface. This commonly occurs on evaporator coils, ducts, or windows when warm, humid air meets a cold surface. Properly managed, condensation is a normal part of air conditioning, as the evaporator coil removes moisture from indoor air. However, excessive condensation or poor drainage can lead to problems such as water leaks, mold growth, or reduced system efficiency.

  • Example: When your air conditioner is running, water often collects in a condensate pan and is drained away through a condensate line.
  • Importance in HVAC: Preventing uncontrolled condensation is critical for indoor air quality and equipment longevity.
